Introduction

Build Change (www.buildchange.org) is an award-winning, international non-profit social enterprise that specializes in post-earthquake reconstruction. Build Change has extensive experience working in Banda Aceh and Sumatra, Indonesia and Sichuan, China. In Haiti, Build Change provides hands-on technical assistance and training directly to homeowners and builders during the rebuilding process to enable them to build safe homes that will withstand any future earthquake.
Build Change is looking for a Design Engineer for its “Programme de diagnostic technique des infrastructures scolaires” with the Haiti Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (Ministère de l’Education Nationale et de la Formation Professionnelle – MENFP). With this project, Build Change will bring its global and Haiti expertise in structural evaluation and retrofit of schools and other buildings, to support and contribute to the reform of Education in Haiti: planning of schools, diagnosis of the public school infrastructure.


Fonctions

• Develop a thorough, comprehensive understanding of the engineering resources developed by Build Change for confined masonry, reinforced masonry, multi-story reinforced concrete frame, timber frame, retaining walls and retrofitting solutions.
• Participate on project teams and assist with the timely and successful delivery of projects related to disaster-resistant schools and houses, and owner-driven construction.
• Assist in the development and implementation of training materials and modules.
• Ensure that the project is implemented in an ethical, consultative, participatory manner with all participants.


• Assist in the revision or development of new structural and architectural drawings, bills of quantity, construction checklists, and training materials as necessary, for partners and clients.
• Implement technologies and solutions that are consistent with Build Change's philosophy of earthquake-resistance, sustainability, and cultural appropriateness.
• Solve problems and generate solutions in the field for special cases, especially retrofits and additions to existing buildings.
• Prepare monthly reports and contribute to internal and external project reporting.


Qualifications Requises

• Engineering degree.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to make clear public presentation.
• Good leadership and organizational skills.
• Proficiency of AutoCAD software and Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word).
• Fluency in Creole, French and English language.
• Flexible work hours, including some Saturdays, and work locations within the 10 departments if necessary.
• An understanding of humanitarian principles and development ethics.
• Experience in teaching construction techniques is a plus.
• Teamwork
