Organization Profile
The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a federally-funded project which supports the development of HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, and Diarrhea care and treatment as well as Nutrition training initiatives in 30 resource-limited countries acutely impacted by the global AIDS, TB, Malaria and Diarrhea epidemic. I-TECH currently supports 11 international offices and approximately 700 international and domestic staff.
Fonctions
Background & Position purpose : I-TECH is charged with building clinical training capacity and supporting extension of high-quality health care services in Haiti. The Nurse Mentor, with support from the I-TECH Haiti staff and I-TECH U.S.-based Headquarters, will provide “bedside” teaching to nurses, auxiliary nurses, social workers and counselors within in-patient and out-patient services of the 20 sites of intervention. The Nurse Mentor will assist the I-TECH team to organize and conduct clinical courses for nurses. She/ he will evaluate the roles of nurses, social workers, and counselors within the multi-disciplinary team providing HIV, TB, Malaria, and Diarrhea care and treatment, and make recommendations on reinforcing these roles to result in improved patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment, patient education, adherence counseling and support, family support communication, and other service areas. Also, the nurse mentor will assist the HMIS team in the implementation and maintenance isante in all sites using the electronic medical record (EMR).
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide “bedside” mentoring of nurses at HUP, MIJ, HUEH and 17 other facilities (33%)
• Demonstrate competent, sensitive care of patients in accordance with national and international treatment guidelines and best practices in patient communication.
• Demonstrate collaboration with a multidisciplinary care team (with physician, psychologist, lab, pharmacy, social worker, and community outreach personnel) to plan and deliver effective care for patients enrolled at all the facilities assigned to her.
• Provide “bedside” teaching to staff and student nurses, auxiliary nurses, social workers and counselors within in-patient and out-patient services.
• Apply clinical mentoring evaluation tools to observe and give feedback to staff and student trainees to improve their skills.
2. Organize and conduct HIV and infectious diseases clinical training activities for nurses (23%)
• Identify relevant topics for clinical training sessions for nurses and locate teaching resources relevant to the topic.
• Assist I-TECH Health Clinical Mentors to develop and facilitate engaging, interactive sessions on HIV, TB, Malaria, and Diarrhea care and treatment as well as Nutrition (morbidity and mortality case conferences, grand rounds, and other training sessions) appropriate for nurses and other clinical team members.
• Assist the I-TECH team to develop, edit, and disseminate clinical curriculum materials for nurses, including training curriculum, video-based projects, job aides, and other innovative clinical training tools.
• As needed, review HIV, TB, Malaria, Diarrhea, and Nutrition clinical training content for accuracy and consistency with Haitian guidelines and international standards.
3. Assist quality of care improvement activities (22%)
• Assist the I-TECH and the 20 facilities teams to identify quality of care indicators and to track these over time.
• Assist the I-TECH and the 20 facilities teams to apply “Plan, Do, Study, Act” cycles for quality improvement.
• Collaborate with hospital leadership and staff to monitor the VCT, PMTCT, palliative care, and ART services at the 20 facilities and make recommendations on improving integration to optimize continuity of care.
• Use the electronic medical record to track individual and hospital population care, and to analyze data on quality of care issues.
• Assist I-TECH and the 20 facilities teams to design and implement strategies to evaluate patient satisfaction.
4. Organize and conduct iSanté and OpenELIS training activities (17%)
• Assist the SI team to implement iSanté and OpenELIS
• Conduct training sessions for care providers on the of use iSanté and OpenELIS
• Utilize the iSanté dashboard to provide in depth technical assistance to the providers based on the sites data
5. Other (5%)
• Provide progress reports and updates, as requested.
• Represent I-TECH in meetings with external partners, at conferences, or other events, as requested.
• Other duties, as assigned.
Lead Responsibilities
Serve as Nurse Mentor at the 20 facilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities
No direct supervision responsibilities for other employees of I-TECH
Position Complexities
Since Haiti is a resource-challenged setting, and most of the facilities are large and complex, the Nurse Mentor must have the ability to cope with rapid change of direction based upon lack of resources, hospital leadership changes, or other challenges. This requires the ability to use sophisticated problem solving skills and to successfully interface and communicate at a range of levels from headquarters and field office staff to highly placed officials within the health care system in Haiti.
Qualifications Requises
• At least 3 years of experience as a licensed nurse professional in the Haitian healthcare system.
• Medical nurse, with a degree from a recognized institution; licensed by MSPP ;
• At least 2 years of experience in providing care and treatment to HIV patients, including patients on antiretroviral therapy.
• Strong grasp of HIV, TB, Malaria, Diarrhea, and Nutrition and related clinical issues, knowledge of infection control and awareness of current medical literature and national treatment guidelines.
• Fluent in French and Creole
• Demonstrated sensitivity to the socio-cultural, economic and medical needs of patients.
• Strong knowledge of health care systems and organization of services to assure continuity of care.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• English language skills a plus.
