Introduction

On the heels of the tragic earthquake of 2010, J/P HRO mobilized a rapid and effective response to save lives and to manage the Pétion-Ville Camp, which swelled to nearly 60,000 displaced earthquake survivors. J/P HRO quickly expanded its services in step with the needs on the ground, working to revitalize local Haitian communities through focused programs including: camp and relocation management, medical clinics, education, community development and livelihoods and engineering, rubble removal and reconstruction. The Organization is looking for: One (1) Urban Agriculture Officer, based at Delmas. Job Title: Urban Agriculture Officer

Salary: 1,009.00 USD per month


Summary:
The J/P HRO Community Development team is eager to pilot an Urban Agriculture Program in the Delmas 32 neighborhood. The objective of the community gardens program will be to introduce community members (including students, saving group participants, community organizations and others) to urban gardening techniques. Participants will diversify their diets to include greater consumption of fruits and vegetables and they will have an opportunity to sell harvest as a Livelihood.


Fonctions

Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Community Development Program Manager, the responsibilities of the Urban Agriculture Officer are as followed:

• Conduct an assessment to determine the crops that will grow well in an urban environment based on the seasonal calendar, availability of qualify seeds in the local market, and local preferences;
• Develop a training curriculum on urban gardening. Modules should include: planting techniques, harvest, post-harvest/conversation, marketing/sales, nutrition and environmental practices;
• Identify individuals capable and motivated to train participants on gardening modules;
• Identify gardening participants (a minimum of 10 community gardens)
• Develop monitoring and evaluation tools and indicators for the program. Establish a rigorous schedule for monitoring/support visits;
• Prepare a final report including impressions of the pilot program, best practices, recommendations, sustainability plan and potential for scaling up;


Qualifications Requises

Qualifications
• Practical experience with gardening/agriculture (urban experience preferred)
• Academic background in environment, agriculture and nutrition (highly desired)
• Experience developing training curriculum and training local staff and participants
• Experience in Haiti (desirable)
• Fluency in French English
• Creole (desirable)
Skills
• Strong writing skills (designing training materials, preparation of reports)
• Good intercultural, communication and problem resolution skills.
