Introduction

GeoHazards International (GHI), an international nonprofit that promotes earthquake and tsunami safety in developing countries, is beginning a three-year, seismic risk reduction project in Northern Haiti. The main goals of the project are to improve the seismic resilience of Northern Haiti, support and foster earthquake safety champions within public and private sectors, and build local capacity within the public and private sectors and in engineering and other construction-related fields. GeoHazards International is seeking to hire a Technical Translator to translate project-related documents and to serve as an interpreter between English, French, and Haitian Creole. The project work will include Cap-Haitien, Port-de-Paix, Fort Liberté and Ouanaminthe and the position will be based in Cap-Haitien.


Fonctions

Duties and Responsibilities
Key Functions:
The Technical Translator will be expected to perform the following functions to achieve the larger objectives of the project:
• Translate project related documents from any of the following languages to another: English, French and Haitian Creole.
• Serve as an interpreter for the Project Manager and consultants during meetings and other project related activities (such as setting up a bank account, purchasing office supplies and trainings for local masons).
• Carry out any other related work assigned by the Project Manager at GeoHazards International.

• Promotes the vision, mission and strategic goals of the project and the UNDP’s program for “Seismic Risk Reduction for Northern Haiti” and the GHI-managed project, Plan Nord;
• Displays cultural, gender, religious, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;
• Treats all people fairly without favoritism.

Leadership and Functional Competencies:
• Ability to achieve deadlines, and prioritize tasks;
• Detail oriented;
• Ability to work independently without close supervision;
• Willingness and ability to live and work in Cap-Haitien;
• Willingness to take a position that will periodically require more than 40 hours of work per week, periodic travel within Northern Haiti, meetings and phone calls at night;
• Written and oral fluency in English, French, and Haitian Creole required;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, French and Haitian Creole;
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Internet research and email, and familiarity with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Required Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree;
• Minimum of three years of relevant experience in written translation between English, French and Haitian Creole;
• Minimum of three years of relevant experience in oral interpretation between English, French and Haitian Creole;
• Experience in translating technical documents highly preferred;
• Basic knowledge of construction terms and methods, and disaster risk reduction terms in English, French and Haitian Creole is highly preferred;
• Experience working with international nonprofits, international agencies or UN agencies is preferred;
• Familiarity with northern Haiti is preferred.
