Introduction

Islamic Relief (IR) is a UK based international relief and development charity which envisage a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential. Working in over 25 countries, Islamic Relief promotes sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and disease. We also respond to disasters and emergencies, helping people in crisis.
As part of its post disaster rehabilitation programme, Islamic Relief Haiti is implementing a school reconstruction project with the outcome of reconstructing five public schools that were severely affected by the 2010 earthquake. Islamic Relief Haiti has opted to design one of the schools internally as part of this extensive programme. The selected architect will be responsible for designing the school under the guidance of the Senior School Reconstruction Manager. Complete sets of drawings, including 3D representations, will be needed from schematic design through to construction drawings. The selected candidate will also be involved in producing the Bill of Quantities for the project to be publicly bid. The role may be extended to include the overall construction supervision and monitoring of the schools during the reconstruction phase ensuring that the targeted outputs and results of the project are achieved in a timely manner under the Terms of Reference of the contract signed with the contractor and Islamic Relief policies and procedures. The job holder will spend time developing the appropriate brief within the school community and in line with Ministry of Education Standards and the budget.


Fonctions

Key Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Assess existing site conditions on site including infrastructure, services and utilities.
2. Design masterplan for school including projected future development in line with Ministry of Education standards.
3. Create detailed designs for the portion of school to be constructed as part of the reconstruction and rehabilitation programme. This will take into account existing geographical, hydrological and climatic conditions.
4. Interpret and incorporate geotechnical and topographical studies from external consultants into the design
5. Interpret and incorporate structural assessment knowledge into the design for rehabilitation
6. Consult with school director, school community and Ministry of Education on the programme brief for the project, based on budgets provided. Highlight any long term maintenance issues that need to be addressed as a result of the design.
7. Organize community mobilization meetings when necessary in order ensure community ownership of the project and to solve proactively any concerns raised by the community.
8. Evaluate sustainable design concepts, appropriate technologies and hygienic sanitation solutions based on infrastructural costs, life time analysis and maintenance requirements
9. Prepare costs analysis of the design at various stages throughout the process
10. Present designs to Ministry of Education and DGS at intermittent stages for approval
11. Prepare detailed construction drawings for the bid process and for use during the construction phase of the project
12. Assess materials quantities for preparation of the Bill of Quantities and prepare detailed specifications. Assist in the preparation of Firm Total Cost Estimates at this stage to ensure construction work is in line with the budget
13. Assist in the public tendering process in terms of advertising and company selection criteria.
14. Help prepare monthly progress reports as part of internal reporting procedures.
15. Perform any other tasks in line with the position required by the Senior School Reconstruction Manager


Qualifications Requises

Essential:
A degree in Architecture

Experience
• Completion of all university studies in architecture
• A minimum of 3 years experience in an architectural firm achieved either in the private sector or humanitarian contexts in all stages of design and productions drawings.
• Proficient abilities in the use of AutoCAD
• Strong abilities in the use of 3D rendering software and Photoshop
• Extensive knowledge of the Ministry of Education standards for school construction
• Proven understanding of and ability to adhere to/ work towards humanitarian standards and principles such as Sphere, Red Cross Code of Conduct
• Good knowledge of designing for local hurricane and seismic conditions
• Good experience in client relations, community engagement and social mobilization
• Previous work relating to schools would be an additional benefit
• Previous experience in local materials procurement is desirable
Skills
• Good knowledge of conceptual architectural design
• Strong coordination and interpersonal communication skills
• AutoCAD, Adobe Suite and 3D rendering skills required
• Problem solving oriented
• Fluent in English, French and Creole.
• Excellent professional writing, presentation and communication skills with a willingness to learn. Must work well within a team.
• Sympathetic to the vision, mission and values of Islamic Relief
