Introduction

1. INTRODUCTION
The Haitian Education & Leadership Program (HELP) is an international non-profit organization; we launched our operations in 1997. HELP’s mission is to create, through merit-based, needs-based university scholarships, a community of young professionals and leaders who will promote a more just society in Haiti. For AY 2011/2012 HELP provides comprehensive scholarship support to 130 students. In addition to university classes at internationally accredited universities in Haiti, HELP scholarships include:
• Housing
• Stipends for food, transportation and living expenses
• Advising and counseling
• Mandatory curricula in ESL, Leadership and IT Literacy
• Access to HELP computer lab
• Study abroad opportunities
• Speaker series
• Career services (internships, job search strategies, job placement, etc.)
• Alumni network

2. OBJECTIVES



The consultant will be responsible for assessing HELP’s student advising and counseling services and issuing recommendations to maintain high quality services as HELP expands to 250 students over the next five years.







3. SUPERVISION



The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the HELP Executive Director and in close coordination with the HELP Country Director







4. RESPONSIBILITIES



The Consultant will assess HELP’s student advising services including:



i. Academic Guidance:



a. Assist the student in choosing a field of study based on demonstrated aptitude and interests.



b. Provide clear and accurate information in connection with the rules, procedures and programs at the university and HELP



c. Assist the student in choosing academic courses



d. Teach good study skills and habits (taking notes, studying for exams, etc.)



e. Assist the student in their decision-making process



f. Advise students when facing academic difficulties to find a way to solve their problem.



g. Collect and deliver information about the needs, preferences and performance of the student



h. Assess student’s progress compared to predetermined goals (recreation of lecture notes, syllabus, examination, etc.)



i. Refer students to appropriate resources (educational, material or otherwise) available at the university and beyond



j. Use as needed any alternative system to provide information or give advice



k. Ensure intellectual progress, personal and social development of HELP student



l. Peer Mentoring Program







ii. Non-Academic Guidance (Counseling)



a. Assure transition from secondary school to life as a HELP student



b. Instill in students the ability and willingness to exercise leadership in the community



c. Assist in the management of available resources



d. Assist in managing the difficulties associated with non-academic issues such as family history, romantic attachments and other emotional issues, that may impact academic and personal achievement



e. Ensure personal intellectual progress and social development of student







5. DELIVERABLES



The consultant will need to deliver the following:



i. Interim progress reports



ii. Consultancy final report







6. DURATION



We estimate the project will take 4-5 weeks.




Qualifications Requises





7. COMPETENCIES



The consultant must demonstrate the following:



i. Strong advising experience with underprivileged students



ii. Excellent written and verbal communication skills



iii. Good practical experience relevant to the announced TOR



iv. Computer literacy







8. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE



i. Master’s or other advanced degree in education, counseling or other related fields with relevant experience.



ii. Fluency in French
