About J/P Haitian Relief Organization
Founded by Sean Penn in 2010, J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) is dedicated to providing long-term support for the people of Haiti and empowering the Haitian community to build sustainable programs. Following the tragic earthquake of 2010, J/P HRO immediately began working to assist the most vulnerable to safer, healthier, and stronger neighborhoods. Consisting of four linked programs—Community Health, Disaster and Risk Reduction, Education, and Community Development— J/P HRO works with the support of and in collaboration with local and national government leaders, community based organizations, other international NGOs, UN agencies, donors, and—most importantly—the community members themselves. In partnership with The Government of the Republic of Haiti, The Government of the French Republic, and The Parker Foundation J/P HRO launched “Haiti Takes Root”, a 10-year long climate change initiative dedicated to the reforestation and development of Haiti.
BACKGROUND
Haiti Takes Root (HTR) is an initiative that was launched at the U.N. General Assembly in September 2015 with the mission to help strengthen the climate resilience of Haitian communities by building capacity and coordination for reforestation and natural resource management, using an integrated, sustainable, and people-centered approach.
J/P HRO is a founding member of the Ayiti Vèt coalition which is Haiti’s largest environmental coalition for a Green Haiti, with over sixty members who gather to share information and learn together while collaborating to meet national climate goals.
As a contribution to the overall GOH-led effort, J/P HRO has helped staff the Initiative, through an Executive Director, technical experts and support staff, who work closely with representatives from other members of the Coalition. J/P HRO is now recruiting candidates to fill the Executive Director position.
