Soil fertility contributes from 30% to 50% of crop yields. However, Haiti’s increasing population and poor management of land greatly impacted the country’s agricultural production. In the Feed the Future West corridor (FTFW), the soils have undergone severe alterations because of unsustainable agricultural practices, which have caused substantial loss of soil fertility and the degradation of its physical, chemical and biological characteristics. In this context, the research program developed by the AREA program since early 2016 intends to address soil data scarcity and soil fertility issues in the FTFW corridor based on a broader approach that integrates the outputs presented below. The project is developing soil fertility recommendations for two major crops in the FTFW corridor. The AREA project is hiring a research soil scientist to lead fertility trials for maize and common bean and to work with our partners to improve soil diagnostic labs.
Fonctions
Manage and lead the field trials for beans and maize. This includes the planning and execution of the trials, data collection, analysis and dissemination of the results with key partners.
• Create outreach materials that provide soil fertility and management (including salinity recommendations for farmers in the FTFW corridor.
• Contribute to research reports and presentations.
Qualifications Requises
Minimum M.S. degree in soil science, or other relevant majors in the agricultural or biological sciences is required, with a strong background in soil fertility experimentation.
• Experience in field-based soil fertility research in beans and maize. Strong knowledge of experimental design and statistics is desired.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and statistical software used for data analysis related to soil fertility
management.
• Strong motivation and ability to initiate projects, set goals, make decisions and solve problems.
• Excellent personal interaction skills required for fostering teamwork, enhancing a good working environment and developing strong relations with project personnel and external project partners.
