Postharvest losses of fruit and vegetable crops in Haiti may approach 50%, depending on the type of commodity and storage conditions. In 2017, the AREA project developed a Postharvest technology and food safety program. This program aims to develop and execute training programs to decrease postharvest loss of agricultural commodities, improve food safety and
inform potential exporters about U.S. regulations related to food exports. In Kenscoff, the farmers produce a wide variety of high economic value but very perishable vegetable crops. There are a lot of losses throughout the value chain. Some simple and affordable post-harvest techniques, if properly applied could reduce these losses. AREA is looking for a professional with expertise in low cost postharvest handling including hydrocooling that are relevant to smallholder fruit and vegetable producers. The Postharvest scientist will conduct trainings to demonstrate how hydrocooling and other appropriate techniques can be applied to extend the shelf life of vegetables in the Kenscoff region. The training will focus on broccoli and address quality and shelf life through the value chain including evaluating cultivars that demonstrate traits that enhance quality and react favorably to hydrocooling.
