Black beans are one of the primary sources of protein and is staple in Haitian diet. Unfortunately, the amount of beans produced in Haiti in not enough to satisfy local demand partly because the farmers don’t have enough access to good quality seeds. Since 2016, the AREA project implemented a legume breeding program research program aimed to produce improve varieties with higher yield, and good resistance to diseases and abiotic stresses mainly drought. The project has selected four promising improved bean lines for field evaluation. AREA will hire a research scientist in legume genetics to lead evaluation trials of these improved lines.

Manage and lead the field evaluation of the 4 bean lines. This includes the planning and execution of the trials, data collection, analysis and increase of seeds from the trials.
• Work collaboratively with CHIBAS to collect, analyze, and summarize phenotypic information from their evaluation trials of the four bean lines and AREA evaluation trials.
• Prepare reports for the AREA project that pertain to the evaluation trials
• Conduct other activities relevant to and needed by the AREA project

M.S. degree in plant breeding, genetics, statistics, or other relevant majors in the agricultural or biological sciences is required, with a strong background in genetics, molecular breeding, computer science/information management and/or statistics.
• Experience in field-based breeding and molecular breeding in beans or other crops, or genetic data management, experimental design, and statistics is desired.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and statistical software used for data analysis related to genetics and plant breeding.
• Candidate must have strong self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, set goals, make decisions, and effectively solve problems. Excellent personal interaction skills required for fostering teamwork, enhancing a good working environment, and effectively developing strong internal relation with project personnel and external project partners.
• Strong communication skills in spoken and written English and a proven ability to work well with a wide range of individuals are critical.
