Background of HAS
Hôpital Albert Schweitzer Haiti (HAS) is a 131-bed hospital located in central Haiti that provides integrated hospital and community-based services. Established in 1956 by William Larimer (Larry) Mellon, Jr. and his wife Gwen Grant Mellon, HAS was and continues to be a model for effective, efficient, and compassionate healthcare delivery in a challenging setting. When the hospital was opened on June 26, 1956, it had two operating rooms, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and X-ray facilities. It also had its own electric power, water system services. But Dr. Mellon realized that the walls of the hospital could not alone provide for all the public health needs. Transferring the leadership of the hospital to Mrs. Mellon, he created a community development program that improved community water supplies and introduced reforestation. Knowing that poverty and environmental degradation are strongly interconnected, HAS supports preventative healthcare by helping vulnerable communities improve their environment and agricultural production.. HAS’ Haiti Timber Reintroduction Project (HTRIP) offers strategies to surmount challenges of deforestation by helping Haitians to plant indigenous trees and learn about sustainable agroforestry and conservation techniques. Through relationships with informal networks of farmers throughout the Artibonite Valley, HTRIP has been able to identify communities of farmers who have some of the greatest needs as well as the greatest desire to learn better practices
