A Quality Education Deserves Job Opportunities

It is true that all Haitians have the right to a quality education from Kindergarten through Bach2 and beyond. The measures proposed by the Education Minister, backed by President Martelly, are a step in the right direction, if fully implemented. As it is said in the military " no plan survives contact with the enemy". In this case the "enemy" being educators without degrees in education, schools without permits, schools in remote rural areas, an uninformed public to name a few.

The Nation should, nevertheless, applaud the President and Minister Manigat's twelve (12) measures for National Education Reform, but patiently wait for the results because they will certainly encounter several obstacles that are endemic to the Haitian system.

A quality Diploma is as good as the job market. Currently Haiti's official unemployment rate is forty. six percent (40.6%), source: tradingeconomics.com\World Bank. We all know that it's higher when you count those able to work but not looking, and the underemployed such as, servants, street peddlers etc. While quality education makes sense, a level job playing field makes even more $ense.

An instantly positive socioeconomic impact is achieved with job opportunities for all willing and able to work. A job paying a living wage raises self esteem, contributes to society's economic development exponentially, increase the value of the gourde, and decrease the cost of living through robust economic activities. Graduates of that quality education system, secondary or post, can look forward to a future in Haiti, not abroad. For, for every quality graduate that emigrate, the Nation looses a productive citizen, a tax payer, and a foreign country gains. And quality grads, remaining in Haiti, attract foreign businesses, thus creating more local jobs.

The creation of a National Employment Development Center that trains the work force, at all level, in resume writing, job search and interview skills, and proper job etiquette should be integrated within the quality education vision. Leveling the job playing field need the participation of labor department, private and public sectors including non governmental organizations. Properly identifying the employment need of Haitian businesses will better prepare the ministry of education in setting guidelines for schools and universities, in addition to preparing job candidates.

All job opening should be listed in a national job database to be disseminated via radio and cell phones. The labor department should set national hiring standards and vigorously investigate labor complaints in order to level the job playing field. Commerce department should define economic development zones nationally and require that all vendors be licensed and\or combine to form businesses that can employ five (5) or more people within a community. That last, but not least, step will also decongestion the sidewalks, increase vendors revenue, expand the tax base, improve sanitary conditions and "yes" Beautify Haiti Cherie. Mr. President make job opportunities for all an integral part of the quality cap on education.
